Fairy tales are filled with magical wizard’s are fairy’s who wield their wands to perform magical tricks and cause the unimaginable to become part of reality. Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother is probably the most famous wand wielding character from our recent past. And Harry Potter of course is the modern version of a wand waving character. So let’s look deeper at The Wand
Modern wands can be as simple as a branch from a tree or as ornate and complex as a fancy piece of metal, forged specifically to a witches specifications. The key to finding your wand is making the wand your own…do you prefer wood? or metal? How long feels comfortable in your hands? Should it be thick or thin? Should it be adorned with crystals or ribbons or perhaps left au natural? All of these questions are to be answered by the individual who will wield the wand once it has been consecrated.
If you would like to see my wand, the one I use personally, please view the video on the Intuitive Butterfly Facebook page dated prior to December 13, 2020. My personal wand is a small piece if stick (I’m not even sure what type of wood it is) that my son found when he was about 2.5 years old. We were out for a walk in the woods and he picked up the stick, handed it to me and told me it was my wand. We went home from our walk and my son asked to decorate the stick. He painted the stick, we consecrated it, and thus, it is now my wand.
Wands were traditionally wood - if you choose to have a wood wand, you will likely choose to obtain your piece of wood organically. Cutting a branch from a tree is a ritual in and of itself. You should ask permission from the tree before cutting and should prepare some type of gratitude meditation or ritual to perform once the cutting is complete.
A wand should be approximately 6 inches. You may have a longer wand but it should feel comfortable in your hand.
As previously mentioned, there are 4 main tools on a witches altar; Athame, Cauldron, Wand and Chalice. Two represent the feminine energy and two represent the masculine. The Athame and the Wand both represent the masculine as they mimic the male anatomy. As such, it is common too to use the Athame and the Wand in spells cast on the New Moon and more common to use the Cauldron and the Chalice in spells cast on the Full moon.
A wand’s real purpose is to direct energy. Your wand can be used to direct energy or to draw energy in - either drawing energy from above or below - calling in energy from the universe above or more earthly grounding energy from below our feet. Many witches also use their wands to cast the circle before ceremony or spell casting.
Charging your wand, aka turning your wand from a stick or piece of metal into a magickal implement; The ritual can be elaborate or quite simple. As with other implements, you may choose to cleanse your wand in fire or smoke, anoint your wand with essential oils or any other magickal oil you have prepared, you may carve your wand or decorate it with ribbons, crystals or other crafty items, you may chant or sing to your wand and you may play music for it. You may choose to leave your wand out under the growing moon, in order to charge it with additional energy. And finally, you’ll want to command your wand to do your bidding and your bidding only…Breathe your energy into your wand and bring it to life.
Always remember when working with any of the implements/tools, to make them your own…make the rituals yours, personalize. Working with energies is all about intentions and the more intention you put into your magickal work, the more powerful your magickal work will be.
