NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING? NAH TOO CLICHE!
Do you find yourself stressed at this time of the year - stressed by the pressure to make drastic life changes because societal norms deem it so? Do you find New Years Resolutions overrated, ridiculous, unattainable and just plain stupid? Do you find yourself re-living past new years resolution failures and dreading what others will think when you once fail again this year?
I hate to tell you this - you’re normal!!! Yup, that’s right - so many find this time of the year horrible, as they are asked that dreaded, persistent, and pervasive question: What’s your New Years Resolution? What do you intend to change about yourself this year?
As New Years Eve approaches, many are forced to carefully examine every minute facet of their lives for faults - they are forced to find faults they didn’t even know existed, they are forced to compare their desires for small changes to the lofty goals of their closest friends and neighbours. And when you do mention your small change or goal, often friends and neighbours alike, although well-meaning, exacerbate your feelings of inferiority and insecurity by asking, “oh is that all you’re willing to change?”
The reality is, this outdated, antiquated question somehow implies that there must be something inherently wrong with you, something that must be changed by way of a resolution. Know what I say? “What a crock!!!!”
You are perfect in your own right! You are perfect right here, right now, and on New Years Eve, you are even more perfect… Seriously, do you really need a special date on a calendar that was developed by (inherently flawed) humans more than 2,000 years ago?
Do you not change yourself multiple times throughout the year? Micro changes? Major changes? Are we not capable, as humans, to adjust our lives any day of the year as we see fit?
Why can’t we, as a collective society, just believe in ourselves? Why do we need “The powers that be” to dictate that we must make changes to our lives on a specific date?
Right here, right now, I encourage you to know in your heart, that when you need to change something about yourself, you have the right and the free will, to make a change, no matter what date is on the calendar!
Go forth into the new year, knowing that when the time is right for you to make the changes that make your own heart sing, you don’t have to wait until December 31st!
In Love and Light
